In modern precision manufacturing, ultra-thin stainless steel sheets-typically ranging from 0.05 mm to 0.5 mm in thickness-have become a core material for high-end industries such as electronics, medical devices, and aerospace. However, their combination of extreme thinness, high strength, and toughness makes precision micro-drilling far more challenging than conventional metal processing.

Laser drilling is the most widely used non-contact technique for stainless steel sheets. It uses a high-energy-density laser beam to instantly melt and vaporize the material, creating fine, precise holes without mechanical contact.


Nanosecond pulsed lasers (ns) are the most cost-effective choice, with pulse widths ranging from 1 to 100 ns. Heat has time to diffuse slightly into surrounding material, forming a 5–20 μm thick recast layer along the hole walls and a heat-affected zone (HAZ) of several tens of microns. For applications requiring ±0.01 mm hole diameter accuracy-where downstream processes can remove the recast layer chemically-nanosecond lasers offer the best value. Common wavelengths include 1064 nm (fundamental) and 532 nm (frequency-doubled), the latter providing better energy focus for smaller holes.
