FAQ

Q: What laser is best for cutting silicon carbide?

A: There is no single laser that is best for every SiC application. 355nm UV lasers are generally more suitable for thin SiC, fine structures, and micro-holes, while QCW fiber lasers are better suited to thicker SiC, larger contours, larger holes, and high-efficiency processing. UV picosecond lasers can be considered for applications requiring finer features or lower thermal impact.

Q: Can a laser cut thick SiC?

A: Yes. QCW fiber laser systems can be configured for thicker SiC ceramic cutting. A representative WHYC Laser QCW system has a typical processing range of approximately 0.3–6 mm. The theoretical limit is 10mm, which is not recommended as a mass production standard.

Q: Can you laser drill SiC?

A: Yes. SiC can be laser drilled for mounting holes, positioning holes, large functional openings, micro-holes, and hole arrays. The appropriate laser depends strongly on the required hole diameter, material thickness, aspect ratio, and hole quality.

Q: Can a QCW laser drill micro-holes in SiC?

A: QCW laser systems are primarily intended for larger holes and structural openings rather than precision micro-holes. For very small holes and fine hole arrays, a 355nm UV laser or UV picosecond laser is generally more suitable.

Q: Is UV laser better than QCW for SiC?

A: It depends on the application. UV is generally preferred for thin SiC, fine structures, micro-holes, narrow slots, and precision processing. QCW is generally preferred for thicker SiC, large contours, large holes, and high-throughput production.

Q: Can the machine process complex SiC contours?

A: Yes. CNC-controlled laser processing can follow customized CAD geometries and produce complex contours, slots, rings, openings, and irregular profiles without dedicated mechanical cutting dies.

Q: Can you test our SiC sample before equipment purchase?

A: Yes. Sample testing is recommended because SiC composition, density, thickness, geometry, and quality requirements can significantly affect processing results. Customers can provide samples, drawings, and technical requirements for evaluation.

Q: Can the SiC laser cutting machine be customized?

A: Yes. Laser power, working area, optical system, motion platform, vision positioning, automation, and processing functions can be customized according to the application.
